Scriabin's First Piano Sonata in F minor, op. 6, was written in summer 1892. It was not his first sonata for piano, however; he had written two early piano works in G sharp minor and E flat minor (both without opus number). At the time, Scriabin was suffering from an injury to his right hand, probably tendonitis caused by excessive practicing, and he had been told by doctors that he would never play again. The emotionally-charged sonata, with its funeral march in the final movement, can thus be heard as Scriabin's "cry against God, against fate." (17813)
