Strauss, Richard. (1864–1949) & Joseffy, Rafael. (1852–1915)

Signed Menu with Autograph Musical Quotation "Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche"

Autograph musical quotation signed from the important composer, accomplished in pencil in the lower left margin of a large illustrated menu for a dinner in his honor held at the Lotos Club in New York, March 19th 1904. Another short AMQS has been added at the lower right by the important pianist Raphael Joseffy, one of Liszt's most famous students (and who also studied with Moscheles and Tausig!). The elaborately designed and illustrated menu depicts scenes from Strauss' works, a vignette portrait of the composer, and the many courses of the meal, which included "Tenderloin of Beef Don Juan" and "Heldenleben Cream." Folding creases with some splits; mounting remnants on the verso with light show-through, overall fine. 53.7 x 41 cm.

The musical quotation is of the opening "once upon a time" motif from the tone poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, opus 28 written in 1894–95, chronicling the misadventures and pranks of the German peasant folk hero Till Eulenspiegel.  (17583)
