Katims, Milton (1909–2006)

Signed letter regarding Toscanini and the Prades Festival

An interesting signed letter from violist and conductor Milton Katims to Louisville musicologist Gerhard Herz (May 9, 1952; 1 p.). 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 28 cm).

Milton Katims writes before departing for the Prades Festival of 1952—one of the first festivals organized by Pablo Casals in his adopted town of Prades in southern France. The 1952 festival featured Casals performing with Isaac Stern, Myra Hess, Alexander Schneider, Mieczysław Horszowski, Paul Tortelier and Katims, among others; live recordings of these performances survive. Katims' letter also mentions the recent recording of Beethoven's Ninth with the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini (the "Old Man" for whom Katims served as assistant) and Katims' next engagement, conducting the Israel Symphony.
