Typed letter signed from the American composer Elliott Carter to composer Wolf Simoni (who later took the name Louis Saguer), recommending the composer David Diamond. June 1, 1938. Translated from the French: "Dear Wolf, This letter is to introduce you to one of my best friends, David Diamond, who is one of our most gifted young composers. I am certain that you will find many interesting things to discuss with him. I learned from Steve that you are thinking about coming to America, which is a very good idea, in my opinion. But you should know that we are also having a crisis here, and that many musicians are out of work. Still, the conditions are better than in France, in my opinion. I don't know if I can help you to come here. In any case write me on this subject as soon as possible, and I will do my best. Your friend, Elliott Carter." Slight smudge to the signature; folding creases; overall fine. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 27.8 cm).Louis Saguer, born Wolfgang Simoni (1907–1991) was a Jewish composer of German origin, naturalized French in 1947. Head of singing, assistant director and choreographer at the Berlin State Opera, conductor and assistant director at the Piscator Theatre, he continued his orchestration training work in 1929 in Paris where he settled permanently a few years later.
From the collection of David Diamond, considered one of the preeminent American composers of his generation. He enjoyed wide success in the 1940's and 1950's, before the serial and modernist trends largely pushed him into the shadows. The New York Times described him as "part of what some considered a forgotten generation of great American symphonists, including Howard Hanson, Roy Harris, William Schuman, Walter Piston and Peter Mennin."
