Very good.
Score to Eduard Steuermann's Dialogues For Violin Solo (facsimile copy of an autograph score, 6 pp., with additional photocopies of pages included) inscribed to Zukofsky at the head: "This copy for Mr. Zukofsky with my best wishes! E. Steuermann Feb. 17th" and signed again below, with an autograph note from the composer at the foot of the first page regarding metronome markings, and with further extensive performance markings throughout. Very good.
Violin part to Toshi Ichiyanagi's Violin Concerto (printed,13 pp.) inscribed and signed on the inside cover to Zukofsky: "To Paul Zukofsky, Appreciation for marvelous performance and giving life to the work. With respect and admiration, Toshi Ichiyanagi." With performance markings including fingerings, note names and marks in red and blue pencil throughout. Together with an autograph letter signed from Ichiyanagi to Zukofsky (May 9, 1983; 2 pp.), asking Zukofsky to bring a copy of John Cage's 6 Melodies, mentioning concert dress for their performances in Japan, and the rehearsal schedule. Also together with a copy of Zukofsky's Japan tour schedule for May 17–29, 1983. Fine.
Score to Toshi Ichiyanagi's Scenes I for violin and piano (Tokyo: Zen-On, 1979; 11 pp.) inscribed to Zukofsky on the title page: "To my dear friend Paul Zukofsky / Toshi Ichiyanagi." With one correction of an accidental in Ichiyanagi's hand on p. 5. Very fine.
Score to Toshi Ichiyanagi's Scenes II for violin and piano (Tokyo: Zen-On, 1979; 14 pp.) inscribed to Zukofsky on the title page: "To my dear friend Paul Zukofsky / Toshi Ichiyanagi." Scattered performance markings in pencil throughout. Very fine.
Score to Toshi Ichiyanagi's Scenes III for violin solo (Tokyo: Zen-On, 1981; 7 pp.) inscribed to Zukofsky on the title page: "To Paul Zukofsky with respect and admiration / Toshi Ichiyanagi." With fingerings and other performance markings throughout. Wrapper slightly creased; otherwise fine.
Also included are 4 original large mailing envelopes addressed to Zukofsky from Ichiyanagi (postmarked May 30, 1988 and October 31, 1988), Michele Porzio (postmarked March 4, 1982) and Jo Kondo (postmarked June 28, 1988). In good condition.
American violinist and conductor Paul Zukofsky was known for his work in the field of contemporary music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Zukofsky was the only child of the American Objectivist poet Louis Zukofsky and Celia Thaew Zukofsky, a musician and composer. He began performing at an early age and was soon drawn to modern music, especially to the possibilities of extended techniques on the violin. Over the course of his career, he collaborated with composers including Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Elliott Carter, George Crumb, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Peter Mennin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Roger Sessions, Charles Wuorinen, and Iannis Xenakis. He gave world premieres of concertos by Robert Sessions (for violin, cello and orchestra), Charles Wuorinen (for amplified violin and orchestra), Morton Feldman (for violin and orchestra), Phillip Glass, and the Scottish composer Iain Hamilton, among others.
