Walter, Bruno. (1876–1962)

Autograph Letter Signed to Moriz Rosenthal

Autograph letter signed from the important German conductor to pianist Moriz Rosenthal, thanking him for sending a composition. July 6, 1930. Translated from the German: "Dear Mr. Rosenthal, Many thanks for kindly sending your musically and artistically very interesting composition (the Tarantella, by the way, is [...] than the [others]) and the kind dedication. Hopefully we will see each other again in Engadine, and best wishes—to your dear wife as well, and also from my Elsa. Yours, Bruno Walter." Folding creases and light toning; overall fine. 8.25 x 10.5 inches (21 x 27 cm).

A pupil of Liszt and one of the leading pianists of his day, Moriz Rosenthal (1862–1946) composed relatively little music. His work Variationen über ein eigenes Thema, which includes a movement titled "Tarantella" appears to have first been published in 1903 and then in 1928 under the title Zehn Charakterstücke.

From the estate of composer, designer, art collector and poet Carl Laanes (1935-2016), who served as the director of the Graphics Department at The Museum of Modern Art, until his retirement in 1976. Following his retirement, Carl put his design skills to use at a much different venue, the iconic Art Deco eatery The Empire Diner in Chelsea.
