Original Photograph

Large original photograph of the important jazz pianist and one of the masters of the stride style, by photographer Duncan Schiedt. Smith is shown at the keyboard, smiling around a cigar as he looks back over his shoulder. The photograph was published in Schiedt's book Jazz in Black and White (2004). Signed at the lower right by Schiedt in silver pen. Mounted on foam core board with a hanging clip on the verso. Some light edge wear, but overall fine. 11 x 14 inches (26.3 x 34 cm).

Photographer and writer Duncan Preston Schiedt, was an internationally known figure in jazz circles and author of four books on jazz. His photographs have appeared worldwide in publications, on record albums, art exhibitions, films, and at jazz festivals. His photographs, now comprising the Duncan Schiedt Collection at the Indiana Historical Society, feature artists such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and many others.
