The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga - INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY TO LYADOV

St. Petersburg: Vasily Kessel & Co.. 1898. Signed vocal score to the Russian composer's one-act opera, inscribed to fellow composer Anatoly Lyadov. Softcover, 9.25 x 12.25 inches (24 x 32 cm). 45 pp. Signed on the title page in Cyrillic in fountain pen (translated): "To my dear friend Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov from his loving N. R.-Korsakov, St. Petersburg 98." Pencil annotations of dynamics, fingerings and other notes have been made throughout. Housed in a custom cloth-covered clamshell box. In very good condition overall, with restorations to covers (recased in soft wrappers with original covers affixed); apart from some light soiling and a few small chips, the contents (including signed page) are fine. Box very fine.

The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga (Russian: Боярыня Вера Шелога, Boyarïnya Vera Sheloga) is an opera in one act by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the libretto, which he based on the first act of the play The Maid of Pskov by Lev Alexandrovich Mey. The opera was composed in 1898 from material omitted from the second version of Rimsky-Korsakov's setting of the play as an opera. 

Anatoly Lyadov was a composition student of Rimsky-Korsakov—although he was expelled for missing classes in 1876! He became a noted composer and teacher at the St Petersburg Conservatory, where his students included Sergei Prokofiev, Nikolai Myaskovsky, Mikhail Gnesin, Lazare Saminsky and Boris Asafyev.  (17265)
