An interesting autobiographical précis in the important composer's hand. 2 pp. Strauss gives a short account of his life and early career, from his birth in 1864 and his early studies, to his first compositions and his positions from 1885 to 1886 as Hofmusikdirector to the Duke of Meiningen, and from 1886 as Hofmusikdirector of the Königlichen Oper in Munich. Unsigned. 4.5 x 7 inches (11.4 x 17.8 cm). Fine.

Translated from the German: "Richard Strauss, born June 11, 1864 in Munich as the son of the local Kammermusiker Franz Strauss, began his musical studies with the Munich Hofkapellmeister W. Meyer simultaneously with his Gymnasium studies, which he completed in 1882. In 1881 his first symphony in D minor was performed in Munich to great acclaim. Since then 15 works have been published by Jos. Aibl in Munich, including many piano works, op. 3, op. 5, op. 8, a cello sonata op. 6, the second symphony in F minor op. 12, a symphonic fantasy "Aus Italien" op. 16 for large orchestra, a piano quartet in C minor op. 10, winner of a prize from the Berliner Tonkünstlerverein, Lieder op. 10 and op. 15 and 17, the latter published by Kother in Hamburg, a serenade for 13 wind instruments op. 7 which was performed by the Meininger Hofkapelle under Hans von Bülow in 15 German cities, a violin concerto op. 8 [.] The symphony op. 12 was first performed in New York under Th. Thomas, and thereafter in 10 other cities, in Munich, Frankfurt, and Leipzig under the direction of the composer. Richard Strauss held his first public position from 1885 to 1886 as Hofmusikdirektor and second director of the Hofkapelle of the Herzog of Meiningen, for which he was awarded the Order of Merit for Art and Science. Called to Munich in 1886, he served there as Hofmusikdirektor of the Royal Opera." (17243)
