Striking 1943 press photograph of the spectacular Russian pianist entertaining the troops at a Red Army airfield. Press caption to the verso reads: "Emile Gilals [sic] one of Russia's top-ranking pianist, gives a recital on a Red Army airfield near the front. This field is a fighter plane station where the men stand by their planes ready to go aloft. At a moment's notice, planes are kept warmed up in background.
