Solti, Georg. (1912–1997)

Signed Baton with 75th Birthday Program

Used and signed conductor's baton from the Hungarian-born orchestral and operatic conductor, together with a souvenir program from a concert honoring his 75th birthday in Chicago on October 9, 1987. The baton shows light staining from use on the cork handle, and the tip of the baton is slightly chipped. The program (32 pp.) contains a facsimile signature on the title page, facsimile letters from Ronald Reagan and others, sending congratulations on Solti's birthday, as well as photographs from throughout Solti's career, and messages from other musicians. Fine. 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm).

In 1969 Solti became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a post he held for 22 years. He relinquished the position in 1991 and became the orchestra's music director laureate, a position he held until his death. Solti for the first time took the orchestra on several tours beyond North America, made multiple recordings, and ensured the CSO's artistic and financial well-being.  (17153)
