Original photograph of the legendary jazz singer at Birdland in New York City, 1949, signed, titled and dated in the lower margin by the photographer, Herman Leonard. Later gelatin silver print. 10.75 x 13.75 inches, matted to 14.75 x 17.5 inches (37.5 x 45 cm). Very fine.
Herman Leonard graduated from Ohio University and was apprenticed to Yousuf Karsh in Ottawa, Canada. Later, his interest in the jazz scene took him to New York, where he established his own studio and shot publicity portraits for up and coming jazz musicians. Among his subjects were Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Quincy Jones.
