Autograph Postcard to Paul Hirsch

Autograph postcard from the great Swiss pianist, the first to record Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier, to music collector Paul Hirsch. Postmarked December 12, 1926. Fischer writes (translated from the German): "I will come to your house with great pleasure on January 7. All the best for you and your house. Yours, Edwin." Fine. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (9 x 14 cm.)

Paul Hirsch was a businessman, amateur musician and collector of musical books who by the late 1920's had amassed the largest private musical collection in Europe. He owned approximately 20,000 volumes, which were stored in his house in the Neue Mainzerstrasse in Frankfurt. The library also contained a concert hall which was a center for musical life in Frankfurt in the 1920's and 30's. After the rise of the Nazi party, Hirsch fled to England and was able to reestablish his collection in Cambridge. (17147)
