Group of Original Photographs

Group of seven vintage photographs of the iconic film star, some relating to his film Giant and some to his love of racing cars. Included are: press photograph of Dean holding several racing trophies (stamps and Spanish press caption to verso, 8 x 9.5 inches); press photograph of Dean in a Porsche (stamps and labels to verso, 9 x 7 inches); photograph of Dean receiving a trophy from "Miss Sports Car Race" of 1954, actress Jeanne Baird (handwritten caption to verso, 10 x 8 inches); two stills of Dean in the 1956 Western Giant (one with cast listing tipped to the verso; 7.5 x 9 and 10 x 8 inches); one promotional photograph of Dean with colleagues and a scale model of an oil rig, on the set of Giant (10 x 8 inches); and one handsome portrait photograph of Dean, possibly also in Giant. Slight stain to the last photograph, but overall in fine condition.

In the last year of his life, Dean became interested in pursuing a career in auto racing. Between filming East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause, he purchased several race cars, including a Triumph Tiger T110 and a Porsche 356. In the Palm Springs Road Races in March 1955, he achieved first place in the novice class and second place at the main event. He might have continued to race if his life had not been cut short by a road accident, caused by speeding, in September 1955.

Giant is a 1956 American epic Western drama film, directed by George Stevens from a screenplay adapted by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat from Edna Ferber's 1952 novel.The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. Giant was the last of James Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination. (17123)
