The Flower Dance of the Viennoise Children - Sheet Music

New York: Atwill. [ca. 1847]. Sheet music to the "Pas de Fleurs" by Max Maretzek, danced by a troupe of Viennese child dancers who visited the United States in 1847. Title with an attractive color lithograph of the dancers by Sarony & Major. 7 pp. Bound together with: "Beautiful Flowers for the Piano: no. 12, Cheerfulness. Danse Elégante for Piano by Charles Voss, op. 269." (Philadelphia: G. André & Co., [ca. 1861], 7 pp.)  Rather heavy foxing to the first item; left edge rough; overall very good. 10.25 x 13.5 inches (26 x 34.5 cm).

Thomas Ryan remembers the Viennese children's visit to Boston in Recollections of an old musician (E. P. Dutton & Co, 1899): "The children were said to be poor waifs of the Austrian capital, taken up, given a home, educated, and provided for by the old lady. From the large mass of children in her care she selected the shapeliest and prettiest and taught them to dance and to do everything in the choreographic art [...] I must confess in advance my inability to describe the beauty of their performance. It was simply ideal. The opening dance was the 'Pas des Fleurs' [...] The scenes were so wonderfully beautiful, and so unlike anything before witnessed by a majority of the audience, that they felt as if they had had a dream or vision of Paradise."
