Signed single-sheet program from a joint performance of the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Beaux-Arts String Quartet, ca. 1960. The program has been signed on the verso by Modern Jazz pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and drummer Connie Kay. The concert, at the Record Hunter, Fifth Avenue, included premieres of two collaborative works between the two ensembles: "Sketch" by Lewis and "Conversations" by Gunther Schuller. The Beaux-Arts Quartet also performed Haydn's Quartet op. 74 no 1, and the Modern Jazz Quartet several standards and selections from the film Odds Against Tomorrow. Heavy horizontal crease, otherwise fine. 6.75 x 11.25 inches (17.2 x 28.8 cm).The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. Under John Lewis's direction, they carved their own niche by specializing in elegant, restrained music that used sophisticated counterpoint inspired by baroque music, yet nonetheless retained a strong blues feel. Noted for their elegant presentation, they were one of the first small jazz combos to perform in concert halls rather than nightclubs. (17099)
