Unusual "Wedding" Photograph
An amusing vintage cabinet photograph of the two French violinists Ovide Musin and Félix Renard, dressed as a bride and groom! Caption on the verso (translated from the French) reads: "Celebrated marriage of two renowned violinists / Félix Renard as a Gendarme / and Ovide Musin as the bride." Large diagonal crease, almost torn, at the upper right; overall good. 5 x 7 inches (13 x 18 cm).Belgian violinist Ovide Musin toured internationally in the late nineteenth century, moving among the same circles as Franck, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Jules Verne, Emile Zola and others, and was the dedicatee of Saint-Saëns' Morceau de concert pour violon op. 62. Fellow violinist and composer Félix Renard is lesser-known today, except as the composer of a Berceuse which Musin popularized and performed widely. Musin recalls a dispute with Renard over publishing rights to the piece in his 1920 memoir. However, he makes no mention of any "marriage" to Renard! (16797)
