South, Eddie. (1904–1962)

"Dark Angel of the Violin" - 1954 Press Photograph

Vintage 1954 press photograph of the American violinist, who after switching from classical to jazz played in vaudeville and jazz orchestras as well as with Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, and Earl Hines. Press caption on the verso reads: "Eddie South, the dark angel of the violin, a favorite with Milwaukee audiences, returns tonight to open a two week engagement at a suburban supper club. Eddie, who won fame years ago, throughout the world, as a virtuoso of gypsy music, was almost counted out in 1948 when he had to go to a sanitarium. It was not thought that he would live. But after two years he came out well, happy and as great a violinist as ever. He gives all credit for his recovery to the power of prayer." Staple holes at the upper left; overpainting to the image; overall very good. 8 x 10 inches (20.7 x 25.4 cm). (16730)
