[Bach, Johann Sebastian. (1685–1750)] Joachim, Joseph. (1831–1907)

Prelude to Partita No. 3 - Autograph Musical Quotation

Autograph musical quotation from the great Hungarian violinist and Brahms collaborator, who has penned the first two measures of the prelude to Bach's Partita no. 3 in E major. He signs below and dates March 19, 1906. Toning and tape remnants to corners; overall very good. 5 x 4.25 inches (13 x 11 cm.)

Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (BWV 1011–1006) were completed in 1720 and first published in 1802 by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn. However, the set was largely ignored for the better part of the nineteenth century. Joachim brought the sonatas and partitas to prominence by making them part of his concert repertoire, recording two movements from the cycle, and also preparing the first edition based on Bach's autograph, which was published in 1908 and is still widely used. The sonatas and partitas are now a central and much-loved work in the standard violin repertoire. (16615)
