Glass, Philip. (b. 1937)

Signed Dollar Bill with Autograph Musical Quotation from Einstein on the Beach

An interesting signed item from the American composer, the influential American composer often associated with "minimalist" music, but who has described himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures." Glass has signed his name to a crisp 2001 one dollar bill. He adds a short autograph musical quotation of three notes, identified as from the Prelude to his opera Einstein on the Beach ("E. O. B.") The bill has been encapsulated and rated 66 Gem Uncirculated by the Paper Money Guaranty company. In very fine condition.

Einstein on the Beach is an opera in four acts (framed and connected by five "knee plays" or intermezzos), composed by Philip Glass and directed by theatrical producer Robert Wilson. The opera eschews traditional narrative in favor of a formalist approach based on structured spaces laid out by Wilson in a series of storyboards. The premiere took place on July 25, 1976, at the Avignon Festival in France.
