Autograph Letter with "Heil Hitler" to Florizel von Reuter
Uncommon autograph letter on a postcard from great German conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and others, to violinist Florizel von Reuter. Leipzig, January 24, 1940. Translated from the German: "Dear Professor, Unfortunately, for reasons of work, I will not be able to participate in your concert on January 27. On your 50th birthday, may I offer you my belated congratulations. With my very best wishes and Heil Hitler! Yours, Hermann Abendroth." Stamped and postmarked on the verso. Light toning, slight crease, with a strip of tape at the right edge; overall very good. 5.75 x 4 inches (14.7 x 10.4 cm).Abendroth replaced Bruno Walter as conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester in 1934, when Walter was dismissed as a Jew. Although Abendroth had initially been scrutinized by German authorities for his liberal views, he adapted to his circumstances and became an approved figure, officially joining the Nazi Party in 1937. After World War II, Abendroth's Nazi background initially had him blacklisted, but he then became an important conductor and cultural figure in the GDR. Signed material from Abendroth is rare.
Florizel von Reuter was an American-born violinist and composer, a child prodigy who went on to an adult career, mainly in Germany, as distinguished soloist and teacher of violin. He was also a psychic and medium and the author of several books on his alleged mediumistic communications with deceased musicians. (16496)
