[Vandamm, Florence. (1883–1966)] Printemps, Yvonne. (1894–1977) & Guitry, Sacha. (1885–1957)

Original Photograph

Original photograph of the acting duo and couple Yvonne Printemps and Sacha Gutry (shown in shadow profile!), captured by the important Broadway photographer Florence Vandamm. Printemps is shown lighting a cigarette for Guitry's shadow, in a striking image ca. 1927. Stamped by Vandamm at the lower left and on the verso, with the added note "exclusive to Vanity Fair." Toning, overpainting to Printemps' eyebrow and eyelashes, and a small loss at the upper right; overall very good. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.5 cm).

Yvonne Printemps was dancing at the Folies Bergère at the age of 13. She was given the sobriquet Printemps (springtime) by her fellow chorus members because of her sunny disposition, and adopted it as her stage name. She first met actor Sacha Guitry after Guitry's wife saw her playing a parodied version of Guitry in a revue. Printemps was soon cast in one of Guitry's revues, and a few years later he was divorced and they were married. As an acting pair in both musicals and straight comedies, they were successful in Paris, London, and New York. They separated in 1932. (16471)
