J. C. Bach's La Clemenza di Scipion was one of several Italian operas he wrote for London audiences in the late eighteenth century, taking as its subject the Roman general Scipio, his conquest of Carthage and kidnapping of the Spanish princess Arsinda. No complete score of the opera survives, likely because of the frequent fires which took place in London opera houses; recent performances have included reconstructed recitatives.  (16420)
