Caruso, Enrico. (1873–1921)

Original Photograph Onboard the S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm II

Interesting original photograph of the great tenor, shown together with Illinois State Senator Al Clark onboard the S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm II on May 5, 1914—shortly before the outbreak of World War I, when the German liner was stranded in the United States. Handwritten caption on the verso. Large losses and tears; overall good. 3.5 x 5.5 inches (9 x 14 cm).

In the years before the outbreak of World War I, the S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm II made frequent transatlantic crossings between Germany and New York, carrying both wealthy and lower-class passengers. At the outbreak of World War I, the ship was en route to New York, where it remained until the United States seized it when it declared war in 1917. (16368)
