[Music Iconography] Großmann, Rudolf. (1882–1941)

Original Woodcut of a String Quartet

Original woodcut engraving from the German painter and printmaker, depicting four string players (perhaps a string quartet) playing. Some irregular toning, pencil notes at the foot in the hand of the artist. Overall very good. Print size 4 x 5 inches, sheet size 8.5 x 11.5 inches (21.7 x 29 cm). Possibly a trial proof for a book publication.

Grossmann began his education in painting and printmaking at Dusseldorf Academy, and went on to study in Paris, under Lucien Simon and Poulerauce. Though Berlin was his home, he would frequently visit France, both to work and exhibit, and for a brief time, to teach printmaking. During his time in France he met and became friends with artists Georg Grosz and Jules Pascin; while teaching, he introduced techniques to artist Sonia Delaunay, eventually helping launch her career in the art world.
