"The Village Choir" - Original Engraving after Thomas Webster

Original woodcut engraving after Thomas Webster's ca. 1847 painting "The Village Choir," depicting a group of English village musicians singing and playing in a church balcony. The engraving is somewhat loosely modeled on the well-known painting, with the figures in the background and at the sides omitted, but the central figures of the man beating time, the girls and boys singing in the front row, and the cellist, bassoonist and clarinetist are clearly identifiable. Engraved by H. Bourne (caption barely visible at the lower right.) Losses to the edges, unevenly trimmed, with painted and varnish highlighting and mounted to card. 7.5 x 6 inches (19.5 x 15 cm).  See: British Museum 1872,1012.6249. (16358)
