Flotow, Friedrich Freiherr von. (1812–1883)

"Lied aus der Opera Martha" - Autograph Musical Manuscript

Autograph musical manuscript from the German composer's best-known work, the romantic comic opera Martha. On a large leaf of hand-ruled manuscript paper are penned the parts for an arrangement of the "Lied aus der Oper Martha," for solo cornet and flugelhorn, 3 trumpets, 3 tenor horns, and bass. The music appears to be a shortened arrangement of the most famous aria from the opera, "Die letzte Rose," lasting only 29 measures. The verso shows 14 measures of open score in another hand, labeled "Coda." Heavy vertical folding crease; area of wear at the left side; overall toning. Mounting remnants to verso. Overall very good. 11.75 x 9.25 inches (29.8 x 23.4 cm).

Friedrich von Flotow's opera Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond is set to a German libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Riese and, in its style, emulates the tradition of French opera composers such as Auber. Set in England, the plot concerns two ladies who disguise themselves as maidservants as a joke, leading of course to comic misunderstandings. The most popular aria, "Die letzte Rose," is based on the Irish song "The Last Rose of Summer," retaining its traditional tune but adding text in German. (16354)
