Signed Postcard Photograph with Autograph Note

Early signed photograph of the important Austrian conductor who served as director of the Vienna, Berlin and Munich opera houses. He is shown in an early portrait postcard photograph, smoking a pipe and reading Charles Dickens' Bleak House, and has signed across the image. Autograph note on the verso to the theatrical agent Richard Lanik, dated November 29, 1917, seeking an engagement that would allow him to travel to Vienna. Translated from the German, in part: "Dear Herr Lanik! Do you have no good prospects for me for 1918/19? [...] I'm longing for a more southerly climate. Please handle my enquiry discreetly." Postmarked in Stettin (then Prussia, now Poland). Colored pencil marks to the verso; some light edge wear; overall fine. 5.25 x 3.5 inches (13.7 x 8.8 cm). (16328)
