Large Signed Portrait

Oversized signed portrait of the great Hungarian violinist, court violinist of Queen Victoria and the early sonata partner of Johannes Brahms, whom he is credited with "discovering" in a Vienna cafe. Remenyi is shown in a three-quarter-length portrait engraving by Hungarian artist Miklós Barabás, standing with his hat in his hand. His signature is reproduced below. At the foot of the sheet, he has boldly signed and inscribed in Hungarian, dating November 26, 1864. Printed by Reiffenstein and Rösch, Vienna. Light overall toning and a few wrinkles; signature and inscription somewhat faded but legible; overall fine. 14.5 x 19 inches (36.5 x 48.5 cm).

Artist Miklós Barabás (1810–1898) was one of the most popular Hungarian artists of his time, a painter and printmaker whose work is often associated with the birth of "romantic pictography." Subjects of his portraits include Emperor Franz Joseph and composer Franz Liszt.  (16283)
