Signed photograph of the American pianist, harpsichordist and restorer and collector of period instruments, grandniece of Martin Van Buren. She is shown dressed in period costume and seated at a virginal, and has signed and inscribed at the lower right. The open virginal is inscribed with the morale in Jean de la Fontaine’s fable PHÉBUS ET BORÉE (Livre VI, Fable III) "Plus fait douceur que violence" ("Gentleness succeeds better than violence"). Slightly unevenly trimmed with overall toning; otherwise fine. 8 x 10 inches (19.5 x 25.7 cm). (16130)
