C. P. E. Bach's theoretical work on the art of playing keyboard instruments stands alongside Quantz' Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen and Leopold Mozart's Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule as one of the most important treatises on 18th-century performance practice. First published in 1753, the first volume contains comprehensive instructions on fingering, ornamentation and style for keyboard players. The longer second volume, first published in 1762, deals with continuo playing and addresses all the possible styles of keyboard accompaniment and improvisation, beginning with the simplest chords and ending with "der freyen Fantasie," or "free Fantasias." The current volume contains the third, enlarged edition of the first volume (1787) and the second, enlarged edition of the second volume (1797). Not present is the further volume of example pieces.
