Strauss, Richard. (1864–1949) [Sors, Ivan. (1895–1950)]
Large Signed Drawing
Large original charcoal drawing of the great composer and conductor by artist Ivan Sors, boldly signed by Strauss at the foot. Damage to the edges of the sheet, but drawing and signature fine. Overall size 44 x 61 cm (signature 20 x 8 cm.)
Ivan Sors was a Jewish Czechoslovakian sculptor, painter and caricaturist whose subjects included many noted personalities and world leaders. In the interwar period, he created and published numerous drawings of politicians and people from artistic circles (especially musicians, theatre and movie artists). A book of his portraits, each signed by the person portrayed, was published in Czechoslovakia in 1933. After he fled to the United States in 1941, his work included covers for the magazine Theatre Arts.
