Currier & Ives Rebus Lithograph

New York: Currier & Ives, 152 Nassau St. ca. 1840. An interesting original Currier and Ives lithograph, bearing a rebus (message in pictures) requesting smokers to dispose of their tobacco properly. The text reads: "Notice to smokers and chewers, [pipe smoking men] [R] requested [toe] [hinge] [inn] the [spitoon] & [chaw plug] & [toe] throw their [peg-legged man] and [tree stumps] [inn] the [stove] or out at the [window]." Foxing and some losses around the edges. 13.5 x 10 inches, nicely framed to 13.5 x 15 inches. (15890)
