Original Caricature Print from "Stage Folk"

An original linoleum cut print of the the great American entertainer (playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, and producer!), captured by American caricaturist and artist Alfred Frueh. As published in Frueh's collection Stage Folk, Cohan is shown in his trademark boater hat, swinging his cane. Signed in the plate at the lower left. Thin paper attached to a same-sized mount with overall toning, but otherwise in fine condition. 8.25 x 12.5 inches (21.1 x 31.7 cm).

American artist Alfred Frueh studied in Paris in the early twentieth century, where he was acquainted with artists such as Braque and Matisse. As a caricaturist, he had drawings published regularly in the New Yorker from the 1920's to the 1960's. His folio Stage Folk (1922) contained 41 caricatures of theatrical personalities, created between 1907 and 1922.  (15850)
