Carte de visite photograph of the composer, signed by Rossini at the foot and signed again on the verso with the inscription: "Souvenir de Reconnaissance offert a Mr Ster[n]berg Hermann, Paris. G. Rossini 1866." Photographed by Carjat of Paris, with the photographer's device on the verso. 6 x 10.5 cm. Small chip to lower recto edge, slightly affecting two letters, else fine. 

In the present photograph Rossini looks self confident, prosperous and cheerful—corresponding to his comfortable life in the 1860's. After his early successes in Paris, Rossini retired to Italy in 1836 but returned to the French capital in 1855 and spent the rest of his life there, enjoying an agreeable existence as a celebrated host and gourmet.  (15704)
