"The Monk's Room" - Set of Autograph Orchestral Parts

An original set of autograph orchestral parts for incidental music to the play The Monk's Room by John Lort, composed by the Scottish organist and composer Charles J. Hargitt. The set includes 9 parts for flute, clarinet, cornet, euphonium, drums, "leader" (violin 1), violin 2, viola, and cello/bass. Each part penned in a bold hand throughout, with numerous pencil and colored pencil corrections throughout. The music consists of 17 short numbers, each with spoken cues relating to the play. Stitched loosely in brown paper wrappers; covers additionally labeled by the playwright, John Lort, with his name and address. Heavy wear to the wrappers, some with tears; some internal toning and light soiling; overall very good. 10 x 12.5 inches (26 x 32 cm).

The Monk's Room appears not to have been much of a success; The Theatre wrote in 1888: "John Lort's very gloomy play, 'The Monk's Room,' is still holding on dismally at the changeable Glove, but the piece cannot be recorded as a success. E. S. Willard, Hermann Vezin and Alma Murray have leading parts, but they cannot give vitality to a play which is about thirty years after its time. Clever acting cannot galvanise a corpse, so 'The Monk's Room' will probably have to be shut up." (15660)
