[English Composers] German, Edward. (1862–1936) & Finck, Herman. (1872–1939) & Mackenzie, Alexander. (1847–1935) & Mackenzie-Rogan, John. (1855–1932)

Signed Photograph of the "A.C.M. Club"

Original photograph of the four British composers and friends, signed by all four in ink on the mount below the image. Three large tears to the mount, not affecting the image or signature, but the lower one extending just to the edge of the Finck signature; significant full horizontal crease through image. Signed lower left in pencil and stamped on the verso by the photographer, Vandyk of London. 35 x 23 cm.

All four were important composers at the turn of the twentieth century. Edward German was widely considered the successor to Arthur Sullivan as a composer of operettas; Alexander Mackenzie was best-known for his oratorios and instrumental music, as well as as the director of the Royal Academy of Music; Herman Finck was principal conductor at the Queen's Theatre, Drury Lane, as well as a prolific composer; and John Mackenzie-Rogan was a prominent military band conductor. The four were the sole members of the "A.C.M. Club," named after Alexander Mackenzie, which was formed to lunch on their birthdays. See: Herman Finck, My Melodious Memories (1937), p. 207. (15610)
