Autograph letter from the French composer, organist, pianist, and conductor to pianist Berthe Marx-Goldschmidt, apologizing for missing an invitation from her and sending best wishes to her colleague, Pablo de Sarasate. Paris, April 3, 1899. Translated from the French: "Dear Madame, I was absent—on Easter vacation! I came to Paris this morning to look for a few pages of orchestra which I needed in order to correct some proofs out in the country where I am, and I found your beautiful invitation! In haste, I apologize [...] Please do send all my best thoughts to Sarasate!! And to you, dear Madame, my faithful, respectful, and admiring wishes. Massenet." 4 pp. on a bifolium. Light overall toning with some mounting remnants to the final page; folding creases; overall fine. 4.5 x 7 inches (11.5 x 17.7 cm).The French pianist Berthe Marx studied with Auber at the Conservatoire de Paris. While touring Europe, she met Pablo de Sarasate, who, recognizing her great talent, engaged her as soloist and accompanist. She accompanied him on his tours through Europe, Mexico, and the US, playing in all in about 600 concerts. She composed several "Rhapsodies Espagnoles," and arranged Sarasate's Spanish dances for the piano. Around 1894, she married Otto Goldschmidt, Sarasate's friend, accompanist, and manager. (15603)
