Herbert, Victor. (1859–1924)

Autograph Musical Quotation on a Deutscher Liederkranz Menu

Autograph musical quotation from the American composer, cellist and conductor known for his many successful operettas, penned on a menu from a gathering of the Deutscher Liederkranz of New York. Herbert has penned six measures of the chorus from his popular song "Kiss Me Again," from the operetta Mlle. Modiste, and added the inscription: "To the first 'auditor' of this little 'tune' from his old friend Victor Herbert." On the verso of the program, a further 22 members of the Deutscher Liederkranz have signed for the guest of honor of the meal, Dr. Emanuel Baruch. Dated May 11, 1909. Strong horizontal crease/surface tear with some tearing to the verso; some light foxing; overall in very good condition. 3.5 x 6 inches (8.8 x 15.2 cm).

The Deutscher Liederkranz of New York, founded in 1847, was originally a male-voice choir composed of men of German heritage. Expanding over the years, it has collaborated with many noted musicians, including Victor Herbert and Jenny Lind; William Steinway served as president in the late nineteenth century. The organization continues to sponsor musical events and participates in charitable work. (15601)
