Morini, Erica. (1904–1995)

Signed Photograph

Signed photograph from the important Austrian violinist who made her later career in the United States. Morini is shown in a glamorous 1930's sepia bust portrait and has signed and inscribed at the lower right (translated from the German): "To my dear Agnes, in memory of our music-making together! Erica Morini, Budapest, May 29, 1932." Photographer's embossed Vienna stamp at the lower right. Mounting traces to verso, else in fine condition. 3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.2 x 13.1 cm). Signed Morini photographs from this period are unusual.

A student of Ottokar Sevcik, Morini made her Berlin debut under Nikisch in 1917. One of the finest violinists of the 20th century, she was the first woman to record many concerto repertoire staples, including Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. The elderly Kreisler said Morini performed his pieces better than he ever had and Heifetz apparently turned to Morini for coaching on his staccato-playing! (15541)
