Vieuxtemps, Henri. (1820–1881)

Violin Cadenza - Autograph Musical Manuscript Fragment

Autograph musical manuscript fragment from the great violinist, bearing an elaborate cadenza for his Fantaisie sur "I Lombardi" (op. 29, no. 1). Penned on manuscript paper, the cadenza of three measures contains an ornamented upward scale from G sharp to high D, followed by a long staccato descending passage and a further lyrical descending passage, ending on low A. Two further alternate passages of one and two measures are penned at the foot and lower right. Vieuxtemps' distinctive signature is partially visible at the upper right, but mostly obscured by the trimming of the fragment. The work is identified in pencil on the verso. Folding creases, toning and some light soiling, but overall in very good condition. 8.75 x 3.25 inches (22 x 8.5 cm).

Vieuxtemps was one of the most important musicians of the 19th century. As one of the greatest of all violin virtuosos, he was compared to Paganini by both Schumann and Berlioz. As a composer, he was an important reformer of the concerto and in this regard, according to Grove, "can be compared to Liszt." His 3 Fantasias on Themes from Verdi Operas, Op.29, on themes from Verdi’s I Lombardi, Ernani and Luisa Miller, was composed ca. 1854. (15538)
