Beach, Amy. (1867–1944)

Original Concert Invitation

Invitation to a performance of the important American composer and pianist, penned on a card of the MacDowell Club of Boston. Text, in full: "The MacDowell Club requests the pleasure of your company Wednesday, November eighteenth at Copley Hall from four to six, to meet Mrs. H. H. A. Beach. Music at 4:15. Please present at door for admission." Beach performed at the piano in a program of her songs and her Romance for violin and piano at the Copley Hall in Boston on November 18, 1914. In very fine condition. 4.5 x 3.5 inches (11.3 x 9 cm).

The most prominent female composer of her time, Amy Beach was one of the first women composers to write in the larger forms and to receive genuine recognition abroad, and the first prominent American woman musician to receive all her training in the United States. After she was widowed in 1910, Beach traveled and performed in Europe for several years. The years following her return to the United States in 1914 were among her busiest, as she concertized around the country. The present concert, at the Copley Hall in her native Boston in November 1914, was one of the first concerts she undertook upon her return. (15519)
