Delius, Frederick. (1862–1934) & Koshetz, Nina. (1891–1965)

Autograph Signatures

Autograph signatures from the great Ukrainian soprano Nina Koshetz and the important English composer Frederick Delius, penned together on a small album leaf. Delius has dated February 1, 1919; Koshetz has dated June 2, 1923 in Vasari, Montevideo [Uruguay]. Left edge rough; some light toning; overall in fine condition. 8 x 6.5 inches (20.2 x 16.4 cm).

The String Quartet in E minor (RT VIII/8) was premiered by the London String Quartet in its revised 4-movement version in London on the date of the present composer's autograph signature. The album from which it was removed was evidently that of a widely roving music-lover, the signature of Koshetz following some 4 years later in distant Montevideo.

A student of Felia Litvinne in France, some of Koshetz's early recitals at the Petrograd Conservatory were accompanied by then-unknown Vladimir Horowitz. From 1920, she was in America, where she sang in the The Love for Three Oranges (1921) premiere with the Chicago Opera Association and later performed with the Russian Opera Company in New York and on tour in South America. At the end of the 1920s she was active in France, where she appeared in the French premiere of Sadko.  Known for her overly-extravagant life style, her vocal powers declined in the 1930s and in 1940 she retired to Hollywood where she made a living as a voice teacher and restaurateur (a venture that ended in bankruptcy in 1942). She also appeared in bit parts in several Hollywood movies. She was one of the very greatest! (15498)
