Del Campo, Sofia. (1884–1964)

Signed Photograph

Stunning original doubleweight photograph of the virtuosic Chilean soprano, signed and inscribed during her year in New York, 1927. She is shown in a dramatic white gown and has penned at the lower right: "Sofia del Campo / afectuosamente para il distinguido Señor H. Davis / New York, 1927." Photographed by G. L. Manuel frères of Paris, and signed by the photographer in the lower margin. One very small tear at the upper edge, with some slight mounting remnants on the verso; overall in very fine condition. 11.25 x 9 inches (28.5 x 22.8 cm).

"Sofia Del Campo studied singing in Santiago, Chile, then in Italy. She only very rarely -- and then only in South America -- appeared on the stage. In other respects she limited her career to concert activities, partly in South America, partly in Europe, where she appeared more as a society woman than as a professional singer. She was the mother of the popular singer and film star Rosita Serrano. She had a virtuosic, well trained voice." (Kutsch & Riemens Concise Biographical Dictionary of Singers, 1969.) (15478)
