Score boldly penned in black ink with fingerings throughout; foreword, notes preceding each etude, corrections, and changes in finer ink in Philipp's hand; further engraver's notes in pencil throughout. 79 pp. Sheets loose, single-sided; enclosed in a larger sheet of manuscript paper. serving as title-page. Heavy wear, soiling and toning to the wrapper, which has split along the spine with small tears. Some light internal soiling and toning but crisp; overall in very good condition. 11 x 14 inches (28 x 36 cm). 

An important pedagogical manuscript from the teacher of, among many others, Aaron Copland, Jean Francaix, Guiomar Novaes, Yvonne Loriod, Nikita Magaloff, Federico Mompou,  Soulima Stravinsky, Alexander Tcherepnin, and Beveridge Webster!

The French pianist, composer, and pedagogue Isidor Edmond Philipp was born in Budapest and died in Paris. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Georges Mathias and Camille Saint-Saëns, where he became a lifelong friend of his classmate Claude Debussy. After a successful concert career, he became known primarily as a pedagogue, teaching many important pianists of the next generation. He was close friends with many of the leading pianists and composers of his day, including Leopold Godowsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Alfred Cortot, Béla Bartók, Nadia Boulanger, and Jules Massenet.
