[Harp] Lenars, Renée. (1889–1971)

Original Photograph

Original photograph of the French harpist, professor of harpe chromatique at the Conservatoire de Paris who was married to harpist and composer Marcel Tournier. Lenars is shown playing her chromatic (Pleyel) harp, a cross-strung instrument without pedals which was manufactured between 1894 and 1930. The photograph is dated 1900 on the verso, but we believe it must date from ca. 10 years later, when Lenars was a young woman. Photographed by Maly Noël of Paris. Mounting remnants to the verso; overall in fine condition. 6.5 x 8.75 inches (16.3 x 22.5 cm).

Lenars appears to have been a rare specialist in harpe chromatique, and was the author of an article on the instrument and its technique in the Encyclopédie de la musique et Dictionnaire du Conservatoire (Paris, 1920–1931). She served as professor of harpe chromatique from 1912 to 1933; after her departure, the class was no longer offered. (15449)
