Signed photograph of the French classical composer, organist, and conductor, inscribed at the foot to French pianist and violinist Céliny Chailley-Richez and Marcel Chailley and dated 1911. Büsser is shown playing a piano bedecked with flowers and lamps, and has penned an inscription to "Monsieur et Madame Marcel Chailley" on the mount below the image. Mount irregularly trimmed with some toning, but photograph in excellent condition and overall fine. 7 x 4.75 inches (17.6 x 12.3 cm).Büsser began teaching at the Paris Conservatoire in 1921, and was promoted to professor of composition in 1931. Hi wife was the dramatic soprano Yvonne Gall. His most important works were for the stage, including the operas Daphnis et Chloé, Colomba and Les noces corinthiennes. He composed in a sophisticated compositional style with finely crafted orchestration, but remained faithful to 19th-century French tradition.
The French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a contemporary of Jaques Thibaud. In 1908 he married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century. Their son was the musicologist and composer Jacques Chailley. (15443)
