Ravel, Maurice. (1875–1937)

Signed Photograph

Signed halftone photograph of the important French composer, who is shown working at his desk and has inscribed at the foot to French violinist Marcel Chailley "as a souvenir of the quartet in F." The photograph is taken from a Dutch publication on Ravel, with a text on the verso about Ravel's Ma mère l'oye. Right edge rough, with some light toning, patches of rubbing and several tape repairs on the verso; overall in very good condition. 6 x 9.5 inches (15.7 x 24.1 cm).  Signed photographs of the composer are surprisingly uncommon.

The French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a contemporary of Jaques Thibaud. In 1908 he married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century. Their son was the musicologist and composer Jacques Chailley. (15439)
