Postcard portrait of the American violinist and composer, boldly signed and inscribed to French violinist Marcel Chailley in "recognition of your personal and artistic kindness" and dated December 10, [19]30. Spalding is shown in a reproduction pencil portrait; another hand has added his name again at the head. In fine condition, mounted on a black album leaf. 3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.5 x 13.4 cm).The important violinist Albert Spalding is known for premiering Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto in 1941. During World War II, he served in the Psychological Warfare Division of SHAEF, and gave a legendary concert to thousands of terrified refugees stranded in a cave near Naples during a bombing raid. Spalding is also known for the American premiers of the Elgar and Dohnanyi concerti and his fascinating autobiography, Rise to Follow.
The French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and in 1908 married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century. Their son was the musicologist and composer Jacques Chailley. (15436)
