Thibaud, Jacques. (1880–1953) [Faivre, Abel. (1867–1945)]

Signed Caricature Portrait to Marcel Chailley

Signed portrait of the masterful French violinist, who is shown in a reproduction caricature sketch by Abel Faivre and has signed and inscribed in purple ink to his "old friend and dear colleague," violinist Marcel Chailley. Below his signature, he adds a note: "from age 20 to 40!"—suggesting the inscription dates from ca. 1920–1921. Thibaud is shown in a reproduction of a sketch signed and inscribed within the print from the artist to the "great artist and friend Jacques Thibaud." Slightly toned, irregularly trimmed and tipped to a mount; overall very good. 7 x 10.5 inches (18 x 26.5 cm), mounted to 8.25 x 11.75 inches (21.3 x 30 cm).

The French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a contemporary of Thibaud. The to played together as concertmaster and second soloist in the Concerts Colonne beginning in 1904. In 1908 Chailley married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century. (15431)
